Classification of the Research Types

1. Case Study (Qualitative Research)

Opportunities and obstacles : implementing a web-based teaching and learning strategy in a vocational education institution Abstract
because
- take a specific post secondary vocational institution as a studying case
-the case study examines the implementation of web-based teaching and learning in a post secondary vocational education institution in Hong Kong.

-considers the rationale for the introduction of web-based teaching and learning offered in the literature.
-examines the perceptions of academic staff employed in the institution in order to determine the scope of their understanding of the implications of this change for contemporary education.

A Case Study of integrating ICT in task-based lessons in HK senior secondary school Abstract

-explores the perceptions of 63 female Form Four students in Hong Kong on the integration of ICT in task-based lessons
-find out the features, benefits and problems of ICT task-based lessons.
-Various data-collection instruments have been used to collect information on the subjects’ perception.

2. Experimental Research ( Quantitative Research )

Learning algebra with computer-assisted program in primary school Abstract
because
- form an experimental group using computer-assisted program
- form a control group without using computer-assisted program
- compare the results of the 2 groups

3. Naturalistic inquiry (Qualitative Research)

A Study of Stress experienced by teachers using IT in teaching Abstract
because
-includes ethnographic research and study of current events
-involves the collection of narrative data over an extended period of time in a naturalistic setting.
-Content: Teacher's IT stress, Sources of teacher's IT stress, Frequency of using IT, Physical symptoms of stress

4. Correlational Research
The Impact of Internet on Loneliness of Hong Kong Secondary Students Abstract
because
-In the study, a series of correlation studies are carried out
-examine the relations between Internet use and impact of Internet.
-It has been found that they are significantly correlated in midst of IT attitudes & beliefs of users and personal characteristics under certain conditions.
-Correlational research attempts to determine whether and to what extent, a relationship exists between two or more numerical variables
-This relationship can be used to predict the value of one variable for a subject if you know the other variable
-Correlation implies prediction but not causation

5. Experimental research (Quantitative Research )

The effects of using computer-assisted language learning in enhancing Form 3 students' learning of Putonghua Abstract
because
-the study was conducted to investigate the effects of using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) in enhancing students'learning in Putonghua.
-First, the students' initial perception of CALL and their Putonghua level, which included reading and pinyin, were assessed.
-students' attitudes towards learning Putonghua were assessed with the use of questionnaires and interviews
-learning outcomes were evaluated with their test results after the implementation of CALL.
- Similar to causal-comparative research but the independent variable is under control of a researcher

Reflections on Lesson One:
What is Research?
According to Gay, L. R., Mills, G. E., & Airasian, P. (2006), Research is the formal, systematic application of the scientific method to the study of problems. Moreover, educational research is the formal, systematic application of the scientific method to the educational problems.

Educational research is conducted in the following procedures:
1. Define: a significant problem and hypothesis
2. Plan: review literature to establish background to the study
3. Execute research procedures: collect data such as interviews, surveys, questionnaires and observations
4. Analyze data: qualitatively, quantitatively or mixed way
5. Draw conclusions and recommendations (Daniel, 2007)

Classification of research by method:Quantitative & Qualitative

Quantitative Approaches
Quantitative research approaches are intended to describe current conditions, investigate relationships and study cause-effect phenomena.
Examples: Descriptive research, Correlational research, Causal-comparative research and Experimental research

Qualitative Approaches
Qualitative approaches include ethnographic research and narrative research. The focus of the method is on deep description of people's perspectives and context.
Examples: Historical Research and Naturalistic Inquiry
