What is EndNote?
EndNote is a bibliographical management software package designed to help us to organize bibliographic references and create a bibliography. Endnote allows us to search, retrieve relevant citations, and builds bibliography.
EndNote Version X is the version recommended for use with PCs and Mac OS Xs. EndNote Version 5 is the version currently being recommended for use with older Apple Macintosh computers.
Introducing EndNote:
1. EndNote is an online search tool: provides a simple way to search online bibliographic databases and retrieve the references directly into EndNote.
2. EndNote is a reference and image database: specializes in storing, managing, and searching for bibliographic references in private reference library. We can organize charts, tables, figures and images.
3. EndNote is a bibliography and manuscript maker: formats citations, figures, and tables in Microsoft Word with the Cite While You Write feature.
Endnote Function:
The main functions of EndNote are:
1. Database manager: stores, manages and searches for references.
The information can be imported electronically from a database or entered manually. For example, students can make a direct export from EBSCOhost to Endnote.
2. Bibliography maker: builds lists of references cited in a paper and at the click of a button will create the bibliography in a number of different styles.
3. Data importer: enables the importing of references from other databases into an EndNote library. For example, after searching in HKUL catalogue, students can save the Dragon results and export the results to Endnote.
4. Electronic Library: manually input the references into Endnote and build electronic library on different research topics. Students can sort and format them conveniently.

Advantages of EndNote:
1. Searching, sorting citations
Citations can be searched by keyword and sorted by different fields. We can display a list of citations on screen.
2. Importing citations from databases
Citations can be imported directly into an Endnote library for future use.
3. Exporting citations to a Word file
We can create Word document with lists of citations in the output style through the Export command. Output styles are provided automatically by EndNote. Here are the procedures:
a. Create a file of the citations
b. Choose the citation style
c. Export the file to a Word document
4. Creating a bibliography in a paper
When we write a paper, we can insert citations linked to the EndNote bibliography. These citations can be quickly formatted to produce in-text citations and a bibliography in an output style of our choice. We can easily change the output style.
In conclusion, EndNote is a bibliographical management software package designed to help us to
- Organize bibliographic references
- Create a bibliography
